this is an animatic: 2D drawings were supplied by the company's storyboard artist,
which I manipulated unto multi-plane images, and then arrayed them in AE's 3D space,
and animated away.
Animatics are a very powerful tool,
for everything from selling a project better than a static storyboard,
to previsualizing a project's timings and camera moves,
to working out whole animations before the real 3D work starts.
If you have "The Incredibles" DVD, have a look in the extras to see the upper end of the scale:
they did full voiceover and music, and basically did the whole movie in animatic form until it worked.
The same toolset can be used with better quality art to make a finished project.
